Q: We were married civilly a year ago and are planning to have a church wedding this summer. Are we required to have three scripture readings? Or may we just have a gospel? (It’s a wedding without Mass.)

A: The Order of Celebrating Matrimony says that readings are proclaimed “in the usual manner” (90), which would imply two or three readings, but it does not require it. The rubric in the first edition did call for three readings (41). I treat this in my book Inseparable Love.
You may just have a gospel, but it should be one that carries an asterisk indicating it is especially appropriate for weddings. Congratulations on your upcoming celebration.
