Q: Here in our parish, the priest and the deacon go and distribute Holy Communion, along with the EMs. While this is going on, the altar servers (all children) remove the Missal, the celebrant’s chalice, and the ciboriums that contain consecrated hosts to be reserved in the Tabernacle (which were not distributed to the assembly). All these items (Missal and ciboriums with consecrated hosts) are placed in the credence table, where the deacon purifies the sacred vessels after Communion. The question is: Can the altar servers move the ciboriums with consecrated hosts to the credence table, or should they wait and leave them on the altar for either the priest or the deacon to do so?

A: The missal doesn’t say, but it is in keeping with duties if the handling of ciboriums with consecrated hosts is done by lay communion ministers or ordained ministers. It would not be appropriate for altar servers to move them from the altar to the credence table.
