Q: Dear Father Paul, In paragragh 147 of the Order of Christian Funerals (during the Final Commendation and Farewell) it says that “When singing is not possible, invocations may be recited by the assembly.” Can you please guide us as to what invocations would be appropriate?
Funeral liturgies at the local Cathedral proclaim the following litany, but I can find no specific reference to permit it within the liturgy.
“By your coming as man All: Lord, save your people.
By your birth All: Lord, save your people.
By your baptism and fasting All: Lord, save your people.
By your sufferings and cross All: Lord, save your people.
By your death and burial All: Lord, save your people.
By your rising to new life All: Lord, save your people.
By your return in glory to the Father All: Lord, save your people.
By your gift of the Holy Spirit All: Lord, save your people.
By your coming again in glory All: Lord, save your people.”
Thank you for so freely sharing your wisdom, knowledge, and love of liturgy.

A: I have no idea which invocations that means, so it’s best to take it on face value.
There’s no Latin equivalent; no. 147 is part of the material added to the English edition with approvals.
The invocations you cite are from the Litany of the Saints and would surely fit within the permission given at OCF 147.
