Q: We have a couple who want to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary at a service not a Mass but they want communion. What are your thoughts on this?

A: The couple is making a legitimate request, but, if I were the pastor, I’d be asking, “Why?”
Maybe there’s a good reason, but the celebration of Mass with its dynamic of offering sacrifice together with receiving communion is much more expressive of fifty years of marriage.
