Q: Are the hymns a mandatory component of the LOTH? I think about Mass and how sometimes we have singing and other times not so obviously hymns (while desirable) are not strictly mandatory in that aspect of Liturgy. So I figured it’s most likely optional for the LOTH. I must confess part of my attitude on this topic comes from finding many of them cumbersome in construction and often uninspiring in content.

A: The hymns are an integral part of the Liturgy of the Hours. The GILH never makes them optional. They are part of the tradition and a constitutive element.
I’m sorry to hear that you find many of them cumbersome and uninspiring. The hymns in the current English translation were approved for the United States in accordance with GILH 178. A fresh English translation of all the Latin hymns of the office is now available in the Divine Office hymnal and in some of the apps. They will be part of the revised office coming into our hands in 2027.
If you are referring to the hymns in the office today, then help is on the way. If you’re referring to the new English translation of the Latin hymns, your situation is more difficult because those will be the translations in the revision. In that case, a spirit of humility, an openness to poetry, and conversation with a spiritual director may help you. Blog posts can only do so much.
