Q: Regarding the question concerning ritualizing candle lighting in the rites of initiation, it’s unclear to me whether this is being asked about Catechumens, Candidates, or both. Though this may not be explicitly stated anywhere, I’ve always thought that the Elect do not carry lighted candles during the service of light at the Vigil, since they only receive the light of Christ during the explanatory rites after their baptism. So having sponsors pass light to them at the beginning of the Vigil, much less at entry into the Catechumenate, would be highly inappropriate, since it is baptism itself that is their illumination.
