Baffle

In Paul Turner's Blog by Paul Turner

Q: What is the cloth covering the monstrance in public during the delivery of a sermon, called?

==

A: It is called a baffle. It used to be customary briefly to cover the Blessed Sacrament for such purposes during extended periods of exposition. Today the liturgy expects readings, prayers, music and even preaching to take place with the Blessed Sacrament fully exposed.
