Q: Father Paul, I have noticed an increasing trend initiated by both Bishops and priests during mass especially at distribution of Holy Communion during funeral mass – and other occasions that members of the congregation including non Catholics are invited to come forward for a blessing. Surely the blessing at the end of mass is ample and that reception of Holy Communion as the source and summit is being minimalised. Appreciate your views

A: I addressed this in my book Ars Celebrandi. I feel pretty alone in my position that communion is not the time to be handing out blessings, so I’m glad there’s one other person who shares my view. My current practice is to hold the host in view of the non-communicant and say, “Peace be with you.” In a way, it extends the sign of peace and avoids anticipating the final blessing. I really think it’s best for non-communicants to stay in their pew. I’m not very popular on this topic.
