Bride at a priest’s first Mass

In Paul Turner's Blog by Paul Turner

Q: I read that someone asked you a question about the tradition of the bride and bridesmaids at a priest’s first mass. I have been looking for info on the because in 1960 I was the Bride at my mom’s cousin’s First mass. My cousins were the bridesmaids.  I wore my first communion dress! I carried the host on a paten on a pillow.  The bishop was there and said it was a German custom. I had never heard of it since. My mom was the bride at both her uncles’ first mass!

I was totally unfamiliar with this custom, but it is very interesting to know that it even reached my home state. Thanks for sharing this—and thanks for supporting us priests even from your childhood.
