Q: I have recently moved to a new Parish. The former Pastor had six candles on the altar. I prefer two candles either on the altar or beside the altar. In my last parish there were four freestanding candle stands surrounding the altar; one candle at each corner. When I became pastor I removed all but two candles on the altar. There are two processional candles beside the altar.
A parishioner wants to know why we can’t have six candles on the altar again.
My justification is I would like the participation of the congregation to be full and active as possible therefore, I would like them to be able to be a part of the Eucharistic prayers and not have their view obstructed by candles.
Any thoughts you have would be appreciated.
