Q: I have a question about candles at the altar? Is 7 candles for when the ordinary (i.e. bishop) of the diocese celebrates, or just any bishop? I know that many churches use 6 candles, probably for added solemnity in general. But, how many candles are required for a visiting bishop (not the ordinary of the diocese)?

A: GIRM 117 says use 7 candlesticks when the Diocesan Bishop presides. Otherwise, it would be no more than 6, even for a visiting bishop.
