Commemoration of the Faithful Departed

In Paul Turner's Blog by Paul Turner

Q: In a former parish, the Pastor liked to celebrate the Commemoration of the Faithful Departed (the memorial of all funerals with the names of the dead from the Fall previous year to the Fall current year). As the rubrics say, when All Souls  falls on Sunday,  it’s then celebrated on Sunday. But if it falls on a weekday, should Sunday be left alone as ‘the day of the Lord’ per excellence and the parish commemoration go rather on a weekday? Thanks Father for helping us celebrated the mysteries of the Lord more properly.

A: If you’re asking, can a weekday All Souls Day be transferred to a Sunday with its readings and presidential prayers, then, no. But if you’re asking if you can pray for all the faithful departed of the previous year in the petitions at Sunday Mass with its own readings and prayers, then yes.
