Communion Minister Training

Q:  Is there a Vatican Document requiring communion minister training on the diocesan level?

A:  In 1997 several offices of the Vatican issued a statement “On Certain Questions on Collaboration of the Non-Ordained Faithful in the Sacred Ministry of Priest.” Paragraph 8 §1 states, “A non-ordained member of the faithful, in cases of true necessity, may be deputed by the diocesan bishop, using the appropriate form of blessing for these situations, to act as an extraordinary minister to distribute Holy Communion.”

For this reason, dioceses should make it clear how the training should happen, and pastors should be encouraged to use the commissioning rite from Chapter 63 of the Book of Blessings.
