Feast of St. Francis

Q: Is October 4, 2020, observed as the Feast of Saint Francis or a Sunday in Ordinary Time?

A: A Sunday liturgy will supersede the liturgy of a memorial. So, when October 4 falls on a Sunday, we observe the Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Even in Italy, where Francis is observed as a feast day, not a memorial, the Sunday in Ordinary Time takes precedence.

The exception would be in a parish dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi. Then it becomes a solemnity at that parish, replacing the Sunday in Ordinary Time.

In San Francisco or other cities named for St. Francis, the solemnity of the saint also replaces the Sunday in Ordinary Time.
