Genuflecting

In Paul Turner's Blog by Paul Turner

Q: Our tabernacle is in the sanctuary behind the altar. Before Mass begins, when it’s time to light the candles, one of our servers genuflects when entering the sanctuary, lights the candles on one side of the altar, genuflects when crossing to the other side of the altar to light those candles, and then genuflects again to leave. Is all of that genuflecting necessary?

A: It’s probably not necessary, but there’s no real harm in it. The GIRM is more concerned about postures during the Mass than before, so there won’t be a clear rule. I probably would not require it of servers, but if one wanted to do it to show reverence, I think it’s fine.
