Q: Your recent post https://paulturner.org/genuflecting-to-the-tabernacle/ referred to the 2019 post https://paulturner.org/deacon-genuflects/ about the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday. It has: “Look up that mass in your missal, and you’ll see that the deacon first sets the ciborium in the tabernacle, then genuflects, and then closes the door.”
In fact rubric 39 has kneeling to incense the Blessed Sacrament with the thurible. There is no genuflection until after the door is closed and the Priest and ministers return to the sacristy (rubric 40). This is similar to the genuflection at the end of Mass, when the Blessed Sacrament is in a tabernacle in the sanctuary. (GIRM 274).
Ceremonial of Bishops, n. 94 has: “The blessed sacrament is incensed from a kneeling position.” The same happens here. There is nothing to encourage an extra genuflection when placing the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle during Mass.
GIRM 274 explains the genuflections and that there are not to be other ones: “during the celebration of Mass itself”. Clearly, during Mass, the Blessed Sacrament is not to be genuflected to when it is removed from the tabernacle or placed in it.
