Godparent proxy

In Paul Turner's Blog by Paul Turner

Q: Can a godparent fulfill their responsibility on FaceTime? We have a baptism coming up. There’s only one godparent, and the person does not want to travel because of the pandemic. Can they do it virtually? Or do they have to be there?

==

A: The godparent needs a proxy who will be there in the room participating in the rite. If the godparent wants to watch it all online, that’s gravy. Not necessary, but nice. That cannot replace, however, a person in the room.

Q: Does the proxy have to be Catholic?

==

A: No. That person is just a proxy. Only the godparent has to fulfill all the canonical requirements to serve.
