Godparents

In Paul Turner's Blog by Paul Turner

Q:  I am taking a course.  The instructor made the following comment at the end of last week’s class that “if there were to be both a Godfather and Godmother that they should be a married couple.”  She said it was Canon Church Law, but rarely enforced.  I tried to find in in the Canon under Baptism, but could not.

Any comment?

A:  The requirements for godparents are in canon 874 §1. If there are two godparents, one must be male and the other female. But it says nothing about them being married to each other. For crying out loud, a 16-year old can be a godparent. Do we want that kid married in order to serve?
