Good Friday

Q: I have a question about Good Friday.  In Catholic liturgy, is it permissible to have the choir singing the Passion instead of reading it on Good Friday? I will appreciate for your suggestions.  Thanks.

A: The Roman Missal addresses this at Palm Sunday #21. (The same rules apply to Good Friday.) It expects the passion to be read by a deacon or a priest. “It may also be read by readers, with the part of Christ, if possible, reserved to a priest.”

It permits several possible readers (or singers), so members of a choir could do this. The priest’s participation is not absolutely required.

The text, of course, should be an approved translation.
