Q: Father, thank you for helping us all knit together the liturgical books. You are a valuable resource. I am looking for guidance on the Holy Oils in the ambry. Our church has a large niche next to the baptismal font housing three very large flasks of the Holy Oils. These can be cumbersome to use during the administration of the sacraments. Is it permissible to have a small chrismatory set in adjacent to these large flasks reserved in the ambry or would this be considered a “duplication of symbols?”

A: We have a similar situation at the cathedral where I minister because we house the extra oil after the Chrism Mass. We generally transfer a small amount of the necessary oil into a small vessel sacrament by sacrament. We like that better than setting up a completely separate set of vessels.
