Incensation of the urn

In Paul Turner's Blog by Paul Turner

Q:  Can you tell me the proper rubrics for incensing- or not doing so- when there is an urn instead of a casket? My new boss/administrator, prefers not to incense at all when there is an urn, citing the fact that, in his opinion, it makes no sense to incense ashes. I disagree and so would appreciate your wisdom here.

A:  In the case of cremation, the appendix to the Order of Christian Funerals in the United States eliminates the pall (434), but does not forbid incense. In my book Light in the Darkness, I’ve indicated that the sprinkling and incensation of the urn take place in the same way as they do over a coffin (p. 60).
