Incensing the paschal candle

In Paul Turner's Blog by Paul Turner

Q: The paschal candle is incensed during the Easter Vigil. It has become customary in some places to incense it as you would the altar cross during the entrance procession and/or the preparation of the gifts throughout Easter. What are your thoughts on this practice? Practically, it can be awkward if the ambo and paschal candle are some distance away from the altar.

May God bless you in these last days of Lent,

A: I do not support the custom of incensing the paschal candle during Easter Time apart from the moments preceding the Exsultet. I’m not sure how that practice began, but it has no support in the missal. Sometimes not doing something brings more meaning to the actions you do.
