Invalid Baptism

In Paul Turner's Blog by Paul Turner

Q: Have you heard of the priest in the diocese of Detroit who discovered his baptism was invalid because the presiding deacon said: “we” instead of “I”?

A: My heart goes out to that priest and all the people affected by his attempted baptism. He courageously informed his bishop about the situation, and this has prompted an extraordinary response from the Archdiocese of Detroit.

The main lesson here is that baptism is serious business, and clergy who administer the sacrament need to use the correct form. The incident should also remind us of how precious our baptism is, and of our responsibility to live as faithful disciples of Christ.
