Lessons and Carols

Q: I have a parish music director in the diocese who will be hosting and leading The Festival of 9 Lessons and Carols this Christmas season. The USCCB site lists readings for this musical event.   http://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/liturgical-year/advent/festival-of-lessons-and-carols.cfm

Our question is this: are those readings prescribed or recommended? If we wanted some flexibility on a few of the readings that the USCCB has listed, may we make changes? Sincere thanks for your accessibility to us through your website!

A: You are completely free to use or adapt this material. It is not part of any official Catholic liturgy. I was able to verify this with the USCCB’s Office of Divine Worship.
