New altar

Q: Thank you Father for your speedy replies.

I volunteer at a retreat center. We are getting a new altar for the chapel. It will be paid for by donors. Is it appropriate to put a plaque with the group donors name and the date?

A: What a beautiful gift. In my view, no, it is not appropriate to put a plaque of donors’ names on the altar, though I’m sure someone has done it someplace sometime before.

The altar is dedicated to Christ, not to its donors.

It would be appropriate, however, to put a plaque somewhere nearby—on a wall, for example, perhaps with a picture of the altar. Or on the web site of the center.
