Oil of Catechumens

In Paul Turner's Blog by Paul Turner

Q:  We know that the Oil of Catechumens is used immediately prior to Infant Baptism (a vestigial catechumenate?), and that the RCIA provides for optional anointings during the catechumenate.   Is there are time when the Oil of Catechumens MUST be used with adults?  Our team is wondering if we’ve been missing something.

Bless you!

A:  The anointing with the oil of catechumens is not required for adult catechumens, but it is a sacramental offered for their spiritual enrichment. It may be administered at any time during the period of the catechumenate, and it may be repeated. Most people responsible for the RCIA are happy to offer it at the appropriate time.
