Q: Reading your new commentary and the anointing of the sick, To Free, Save and Raise Up. As always, outstanding.
Question: p. 80-81. The Roman ritual actually anointed the priests hands with the oil of catechumens and not chrism at their ordination? Or both oils?? If you can share more details for me for clarification. Thank you so much!

A: The custom was to anoint the new priest on the hands with the oil of catechumens. Chrism had been used in antiquity, and it was reintroduced with the liturgical renewal. It’s an element of the liturgical reform that many people overlook. I treat this on pages 187-188 of my book Present for God’s Call.
