Pouring wine into the chalice – Updated

Q:  In the absence of a deacon, is an acolyte allowed to pour the wine into the chalice during the preparation of the altar within the celebration of the mass?

A:  Order of Mass 24 says that the deacon or a priest pours wine into the chalice, adds a little water, and recites the accompanying prayer. It is not appropriate for someone else to do that.

Q:  I just read your latest blog response regarding an acolyte pouring wine.   I actually asked a very similar question to you back in 2016 about a sacristan pouring wine and you gave a different response (see link below).   Just wanted to get your thoughts!  https://paulturner.org/sacristans-pouring-wine/

A:  Thanks for catching that. I presumed that the second question pertained to the role of the deacon adding water to the wine. In the absence of a deacon, someone else could pour wine into the chalice as I said in 2016, but the priest adds the water.
