Q: I know Canon Law states that a parent cannot be a sponsor for their child. My question is, can a priest or a deacon who is the presider at a baptism also be listed as a sponsor for the child he is baptizing? I could not find anything to the contrary.

A: I don’t see anything to the contrary either. Hence, I believe it is possible. Normally, this would not be advised because the priest or deacon has another role – the presider. But I see nothing in canon or liturgical law forbidding him to serve as the godparent / sponsor.
