Reading the Gospel

Q: Let me ask… about reading the Gospel.

What do you think about splitting up a Gospel for two readers (priest and deacon) for “longer gospels” like the Lazarus narrative last Sunday?

A: GIRM 109 permits more than one reader only for the proclamation of the Passion, not for other passages, though the Directory for Masses with Children allows it more broadly, “when the texts of the readings lends itself to this” (47).

Also, if a deacon is present, the gospel properly belongs to him—not to the priest. GIRM 59 says that the function of proclaiming the readings is not presidential.
