Q: Hello Fr Paul, just looking for some guidance with what the proper protocol is for replacing a broken paschal candle with a new one.

A: Sorry to hear about this dilemma. I don’t recall seeing directives to cover this, so you may decide on something that seems fitting. If part of the candle can be salvaged, just use it, even if it no longer has the emblems on it. Or you could respectfully dispose of it and purchase a new candle. You could simply put the new one into use, but if some people wanted to pray around it with words from the light ceremony of the Vigil, that could be an opportunity to place it respectfully into service.
If it’s any consolation, at the Easter Vigil, the priest blesses the fire, not the candle.
