Second collection

Q: Our liturgy council is discussing moving the second collection to either before or after the Prayer After Communion.  Any feedback here?  Thanks.

A: I treat this in my book Let Us Pray. The liturgical documents make no mention of the second collection, so it falls to local custom. In my view, it is most expressive when it is taken up immediately after the first collection with a second set of ushers receiving the offerings at a distance of a few pews. That way all the offerings of the people may be included in the procession of the gifts as a sign of the sacrifice of the people being offered in union with the sacrifice of Christ.
