Songs during communion

In Paul Turner's Blog by Paul Turner

Q:  Been advised that Catholic liturgy requires 2 songs during the communion service. In our church both are Cantor driven songs. The first song is acceptable. The second one however interferes with any meditation your trying to have after receiving communion. Are there any church rules that prevent the second song from being meditation music.

A:  The liturgy does not require two songs during communion, just one. There may be a song of thanksgiving after communion (Order of Mass 138, General Instruction of the Roman Missal 88 and 164), but 88 says it is sung “by the whole congregation.” Silence is another option. You can find more on this in my book Let Us Pray: A Guide to the Rubrics of Sunday Mass.
