Q: Should the people stand to be incensed at Mass?
GIRM 146 describes them standing after this: “The people rise and make the response May the Lord accept the sacrifice, …”. The 1975 GIRM 107 is similar, but did not say they were to rise then. The current Order of Mass rubric 29 has: “The people rise and reply” for this response, written after Priest’s invitation that ends with “…the almighty Father.”
The 1984 Ceremonial of Bishops, for a stational Mass, had people standing earlier, with the n. 149 instruction “all rise” (after the gifts, altar and cross are incensed, but before the bishop is incensed). But this reflected the less precise instructions about posture in the earlier Roman Missal, 1975 GIRM 21. Do you think people should stand at the time the Roman Missal now requires, in a stational Mass?

A: GIRM 146 does not consider the use of incense, which introduces new factors.
I believe CB 149 applies more generally: The people stand when the incensing of individuals begins–clearly when a bishop presides, but by analogy with a presiding priest at another Mass. This would cohere with GIRM 43. See more here: https://paulturner.org/pray-brethren
