Substituting Flowers with Greenery during Lent

Q: We know that GIRM forbids flowers during the Lenten Season with exception of feasts and Laetare Sunday.

Here in the Philippines, Lent is Graduation season and it is customary to decorate the altar with flowers during the Baccalaureate Mass. Some churches also hosts graduation rites, hence the need for flowers. What is your opinion on these?

A: GIRM 305 says no flowers during Lent, but creates an exception on feasts and solemnities, as you note. Weddings may be celebrated during Lent, but the couple is supposed to keep in mind the nature of the penitential day (OCM 32).

I can’t point to a rubric that permits flowers at a Lent Baccalaureate Mass, but given the nature of the day and the spirit of these other rules, I personally think it would be fine.

Still, you’ll find some other people who think otherwise.
