Q: A couple asked me if they could write their own vows for their wedding. Does the Catholic Church allow that?

A: Well, no. These are the words that make the sacrament, so they should not alter them. They don’t want someone to watch the video ten years from now and go, “Wait! They’re not married! They didn’t say the right words!”
Show the couple the words we have. They’re really quite lovely. Find out what else they want to say. Maybe there’s some other place or time that day that they could say something more to each other.
