Hanc igitur

Q: For both liturgical and theological reasons, I avoid combining the baptism of adults with receiving baptized adults into the Church at the Easter Vigil. I baptized folks at the Easter Vigil and am now preparing to receive baptized adults on Divine Mercy Sunday, during the Octave of Easter. These adults need to be confirmed.

I tend to use Eucharistic Prayer I during the Octave. Here is my question …

The rubric for Divine Mercy Sunday calls for the proper form of the Hanc igitur. The rubric for the Mass for the Conferral of Confirmation has a different proper form of the Hanc igitur. Which takes precedence? In this situation, would it be more prudent to just Eucharistic Prayer III and use that proper insert?

A: I had a similar situation—I received a Christian into full communion on Sunday morning and used Prayer I. I chose to use the Hanc igitur for the octave, partly because it pertains only to that week and that eucharistic prayer, and I think its tradition argues in favor of its usage.

I could also argue that the other proper form of the Hanc igitur is said within the Ritual Mass of Confirmation, which is not permitted on the Sundays of Easter.

Blessings on your ministry.
