Posture at Confirmation Update

Q: In https://paulturner.org/posture-at-confirmation/ you wrote: “OConf 24 says that the bishop stands for the laying on of hands, and no change of posture is indicated when he administers chrism.”

However, the 1984 Ceremonial of Bishops, n. 465 has, after the laying on of hands: “Then the bishop sits and takes the miter. The deacon brings the vessel or vessels of chrism to the bishop.”

If the candidates go to him, nothing indicates that he stands for the anointing. This is presented as the standard method. CB 466: “Each candidate goes to the bishop (or to a presbyter), or, if circumstances suggest, the bishop, with miter and staff, (and the presbyters) may go to the individual candidates.”

A: Thanks for pointing this out. OConf 26 is parallel to CB 465. It says nothing about the bishop sitting and receiving the miter, so it is hard to know, when blending these books, if he sits just to receive the miter or if he may continue sitting for the confirmations. I imagine a bishop could argue it either way.
