Alleluia at communion

In Paul Turner's Blog by Paul Turner

Q: Now that I have subscribed to your blogs for some time, I wanted to tell you how much I enjoy them.  The best part is being reminded of the little things we do regularly, are we doing them correctly.

Recently, you discussed the Alleluia.  When it comes to communion services, should we sing it as well?  Thank you for all you do.

A: Thanks for your comments on my blog.

The Rite of Distributing Holy Communion Outside Mass says that the liturgy of the word “takes place as at Mass” (29). It doesn’t mention the gospel acclamation, but I’d say the same rules apply. If it’s a Sunday, it should be sung. If it’s a weekday, you may sing, recite, or omit it.

Blessings on your work.
