Q: Congratulations on writing the commentary guide for the new Order of Anointing of the Sick and of their Pastoral Care book. I have a couple of questions on this topic.
- Have the laity prayers changed?
- If not, can the old laity prayers still be used in 2026 and beyond?
- Does the Laity need this new book if they give communion out to homebound? I am wondering if we need to order a number of these books for the pastoral care team or not.
- What prayers changed for the clergy (priest/deacon) that requires new books?
Thank you for your help in clearing these questions up.

A: The new Order of Anointing of the Sick and of their Pastoral Care is more clearly designed for priests and deacons. There are some sections that may have a lay leader, such as the prayers for the dying. But when lay ministers bring communion to the sick, especially as viaticum, they are to use a different book, the new translation of Holy Communion and Worship of the Eucharistic Mystery Outside Mass, which is now in force.
All priests and deacons will need to use the new translation of the OAS starting in 2026.
