Q: Is it appropriate to confer the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick during the Penetential Rite at Mass rather than after the homily given the capacity of this sacrament to forgive venial sin. In our parish we have monthly opportunity to confer this sacrament during mass at which 30-40 people attend.

A: No, there’s no provision for that. After the Second Vatican Council many of the sacraments and sacramental ceremonies moved to a position after the homily. This gives them a unified expression of putting the word of God into action before the more sublime sacrament of the eucharist takes place. The anointing of the sick concerns more than the forgiveness of sins.
