Baptism for adopted child

Q: We have a same sex couple in our parish who have adopted a child. Can we baptize that baby?

A: You’ll hear different answers to this question, for sure. I’d start with Canon 868 §1. 2/, which says for a baptism to take place “there must be a founded hope that the infant will be brought up in the Catholic religion; if such hope is altogether lacking, the baptism is to be delayed according to the prescripts of particular law after the parents have been advised about the reason.”

If I were the pastor, I’d want a conversation with the couple to learn how they plan to bring the child up in the Catholic religion when the Church does not approve of their home life. If they had a convincing plan, I’d baptize that baby. But, as you can imagine, not every pastor will agree.
