Bells during Lent

Q: Should wooden clappers be used instead of bells during Lent?

A: Although they can be heard in some locations, clappers are not part of any liturgical legislation. The documents speak only of bells, and there is no restriction on them throughout Lent. From the Gloria on Holy Thursday to the Gloria at the Easter Vigil the altar bells are silent, and there is nothing to replace them.

I generally encourage people not to add practices that do not appear in the rubrics.

Bells are always optional at mass. If you decide against using bells for Lent, they are replaced with silence.
