Q: The General Instruction for the Roman Missal indicates that the Book of the Gospels is carried up and placed on the altar when processing in, rather than waiting in front of the altar with president and others as the reverence the alter … whereas the Introduction to the Book of the Gospels #9 denotes waiting with presider and others and going to the alter with them … why the lack of continuity, I’m trying to clarify which practice is actually prescribed. Additionally, the Gospel book, should it be in a stand on the alter for displaying or lying flat on the alter?

A: I understand that a new edition of that Introduction is in the works, and no. 9 will be adjusted to harmonize with the GIRM. Follow GIRM 172–174.
For the use of a stand, here’s a previous post: https://paulturner.org/book-of-the-gospels-on-the-altar/
