Deacons and blessings

In Paul Turner's Blog by Paul Turner

Q: I have a question that was brought up to me by a transitional deacon this morning.  He stated that deacon’s have only a limited amount of blessing one can offer a person.  Is that true?  I don’t recall in formation we went through this.  If this is true, can you identify what those blessing/prayers are? Thank you for your help.

A: The Book of Blessings 18c simply says that “whenever a priest is present, it is more fitting that the office of presiding be assigned to him and that the deacon assist by carrying out those functions proper to the diaconate.” Otherwise, it makes no distinction between blessings given associated with these ministers.
