Exposition

Q: At our seminary, when the Blessed Sacrament is exposed the benediction candelabras are placed on the altar and the altar candles are not lit. Are there any rubrics as to whether the altar candles should also be lit alongside with the benediction candelabras when the Blessed Sacrament is exposed?

Holy Communion and Worship of the Eucharistic Mystery outside Mass outlines Exposition of the Most Blessed Sacrament. It says at no. 85, “When exposition of the Most Blessed Sacrament is conducted with a monstrance, four or six candles are lit, as at Mass, and incense is used.” It never mentions candelabra, though these are commonly in use. I believe that HC is trying to show the parallel between Mass and exposition, so lighting the altar candles is always appropriate. I see no problem maintaining the custom of lighting candelabra as well. But there’s no direction for it.
