Facing the Entrance Procession and Recession

Q: Hello! As always, thank you for your insights, wisdom and examples.

On the question of facing the liturgical procession,  I had the impression of facing the cross leading the Entrance procession and the Gospel Book being processed in, rather than the presider.  I see some folks signing themselves with the sign of the cross as the crucifix is processed by, but few reverencing the Book of the Gospels in any way, and some do bow to the presider.

Would it be more appropriate  for the entire assembly to face the altar  (front) while singing the Entrance song?

Thanks again! Peace and blessed Advent!

A: Yes, in my view it is more appropriate for the assembly to face forward and sing. People have a natural curiosity about who and what are in the entrance procession, but the rubrics of the Mass call for no reverence to be given the cross or to the priest at that time.  If incense is used, then the thurifer bows to the priest and to the cross before and after the incensation. But not in the procession. See a previous post HERE.

Again, I understand that people mean well, that they have devotion and reverence, but it would be helpful to the entire celebration if all observed the proper reverences together. These will emphasize objects such as the altar and the book of the gospels.
