Funeral on All Souls Day

In Paul Turner's Blog by Paul Turner

Q: Is it possible to have a funeral mass or even a service on All Soul’s Day? The Ordo’s instruction is: “All other celebrations are not permitted”. However, reading GIRM 380-381 there appears to indicate that it is allowable as All Soul’s is not a solemnity, feast day, nor a day of obligation. Please advise.

Thank you for your attention as always.

A: According to the chart in the appendix of the Ceremonial of Bishops, a funeral mass is permitted on All Souls’ Day. The ordo should read “All other celebrations that are not masses of the dead are not permitted.” That’s how it reads in the Vatican’s ordo.
