Gloria at a funeral

Q: I am a Music Director at a parish.  A long-time parishioner’s wife planned her funeral before her death and specified a particular Gloria that she loved.  I know that the Gloria is not sung during a Funeral.  How do you recommend I deal with this.

A: I’d probably accommodate the request, singing it before the collect—perhaps with an explanation that this is at the request of the deceased.

GIRM 53 says that the Gloria may be sung “at particular celebrations of a more solemn character,” and perhaps she considered her funeral to fit that category.
