All Saints and All Souls

In Paul Turner's Blog by Paul Turner

Q: May I please ask for your help?  I do the music planning for liturgies at my Parish.  This year, All Saints Day falls on a Saturday, and All Souls Day falls on Sunday.

Respond and Acclaim has psalms and Gospel Acclamations for both.If we are planning the music for the Saturday Vigil Mass at 4:00,  should we be doing the music for All Saints Day or All Souls Day?    I’m confused because it’s a Vigil Mass for the following Sunday, but then again, All Saints Day is a feast day.    I would really appreciate your advice and clarification regarding what music is appropriate.

Here’s what I’ve sent out to the parishes of our diocese:

In planning for Saturday, November 1, and Sunday, November 2, please note the following: On Friday evening, October 31, Evening Prayer I is prayed, but any evening Mass is that of the ferial day because All Saints is not a day of precept this year. Wedding Masses on November 1 use the presidential prayers and readings of All Saints’ Day, not those from the Ritual Mass for Marriage. On Saturday, after Evening Prayer II of All Saints, Evening Prayer for the Office of the Dead may be added. Saturday evening regularly scheduled anticipated Masses are to be those of All Souls. On Sunday, the Liturgy of the Hours follows the 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time, but morning and evening prayer from the Office of the Dead may be prayed when celebrated with the people.
